Punggol Satay – Well-marinated satay and fragrant ketupat
The stall’s name pays homage to its beginnings in Punggol until the son of the original owners decided to restart the family business in Queenstown.
The usual three options of chicken, pork and mutton, as well as ketupats are $0.70 each, with a minimum order of 10 sticks. Each type also comes in denominations of 5, so you have to get 15 sticks to try all three meats. Every order is only grilled upon order, so be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes to get your satay.
Punggol Satay is well marinated with a sweet, turmeric glaze, and barbecued till charred. The smoky flavours mix together well with the smooth peanut sauce. The peanut sauce comes with pineapple jam, giving the meat a refreshing, tangy flavour. The pork satay is the best here, with thick pieces of fat in between the meat that is bursting with flavourful fat juices.
The ketupat here is also one of the better ones around, with fragrant rice packed into a rounded rectangle with the pandan aroma from its wrappings.
The only reason I’m giving this one a score of 88 is that a more concentrated pineapple jam and thicker peanut sauce would have really made this a great satay joint.
